It’s not surprising that laminate wooden floors have become so popular with homeowners – they are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. In addition to being attractive and low maintenance, laminate flooring is good for the environment.

The core of a laminate floor plank is made of high density fibre (HDF) which is derived either from industrial wood waste that would otherwise have been dumped in a landfill or burned, or ecologically-sustainable pine trees. Laminate flooring, in other words, gives you the appearance of exotic hardwood without endangering actual trees.

The wear resistance of laminate flooring is an important specification when you are choosing a laminate floor. The wear resistance is classified into 5 levels, from AC1 to AC5. AC1 is for residential use in low traffic areas like bedrooms, AC2 for use in medium traffic domestic areas and AC3 for high traffic residential use, for example in kitchens and hallways, or low traffic commercial use. The highest ratings, AC4 and AC5, are for medium and high traffic commercial use respectively.

If you’re trying to decide whether to install laminate wooden flooring or hardwood floors, there are a number of considerations. The price of hardwood floors is generally at least 2 to 3 times that of laminate floors, and if you want floors made of exotic wood, the price can be even higher.

The installation of laminate flooring is quicker and cheaper than the installation of hardwood floors. While hardwood flooring must be installed with glue and nails, as well as professional carpentry skills, laminate flooring simply clicks together.

Laminate wooden flooring is resistant to moisture, stains and fading, and usually carries a 10 to 30 year warranty. Hardwood floors are susceptible to scratching, fading and stains – it may be necessary to re-sand the floor to remove stains, while laminate flooring can be cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth. Hardwood flooring is also susceptible to moisture, which can cause shrinking, swelling and warping.

Fiesta Flooring is happy to give you advice on which kind of flooring would best suit your needs. We service the entire Ekurhuleni area, including Springs, Benoni, Germiston, Boksburg, Brakpan and Edenvale.
